Fleetwood Town boss Simon Grayson makes Charlton claim after 1-1 draw

Simon Grayson felt his Fleetwood side mastered the conditions far better in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Charlton – claiming opposite number Lee Bowyer would be “delighted” with a point.

Jayden Stockley headed the Addicks into a fifth-minute lead but it was cancelled out by Paddy Madden just before the break.

Fleetwood had 22 shots – eight on target – with Ben Amos performing heroically to prevent a Charlton defeat.

Grayson said: “I’m really pleased but disappointed at the same time. I’m really pleased with the performance, how we competed, how we played and the football we played, the number of chances we created and how we responded after going a goal down. We’re disappointed we haven’t won the game because of them chances, the possession we had – the domination we had.

“I’m sure Lee will be delighted they got a point. It was a tough game because of the conditions. Are our players more used to it? Probably a little more if I’m being honest, but I do believe we played it better.

“The first half we asked the questions and were playing against the wind but when we had the wind and we couldn’t have played wide – because it was going to run away. So we played between the lines and started dropping into strikers and we played some really good stuff.”

“We were inches away from that second goal and going on to win the game.

“The [Charlton] goal was avoidable. All week we’d been talking about how Charlton play. They have a lad on the left who is right footed and checks back – Stockley peels off. We showed the centre-backs that and he went and did it. But we showed great character. Stockley is a handful, he’s a throwback centre-forward. But Holgate and Hill, they work really hard in training and they do really well which is testament to them as individuals as a football club as well.”
