Former Charlton fans’ favourite has say on Chuks Aneke’s dismissal against Gillingham
Former Charlton midfielder Rob Lee felt Chuks Aneke could have no complaints about his dismissal in Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Gillingham.
The striker was showed two yellow cards to get his marching orders in the 70th minute.
And Lee, on punditry duty for Valley Pass, told presenter Scott Minto: “He led with his arm and he had no chance of winning the ball with his head. In this day and age it is a booking. In our [playing] day, no. It’s a needless red card and it changed the game.
“When you swing a leg, when you’re on a booking, and catch somebody – if you see it in slow motion they always look worse. It’s how high the challenge is as well.”
Lee, who was sold by the Addicks to Newcastle in 1992, also felt that debutant Diallang Jaiyesimi should have delivered more crosses into the box.
The deadline day addition from Swindon Town came on in the first period when Jake Forster-Caskey went off with a hamstring complaint.
And Lee cited the assist by Andrew Shinnie for Jayden Stockley’s headed goal as as example of what former Dulwich Hamlet youngster Jaiyesimi should have done more.
“I’d say the thing about him is that you look at when Shinnie had the ball out wide – he didn’t need to beat his man. He whipped it in.
“He [Jaiyesimi] twists and turns. He’s got pace. Keith Gillespie [the former Newcastle winger] used to push it past someone and then whip it in. He’s got to put that into his game.
“You can see he can dribble and do tricks. The question is can he put crosses in that will allow Jayden Stockley and Chuks Aneke to get goals? I didn’t see one good cross come in from him, for all the ball he had.
“You can look good, but all strikers want is a good quality cross come in, which we know at this level is an absolute danger. He needs to get that into his game.
“Is it the modern day game? The wingers all seem to come in and want to play, dribble, twist and turn. Surely your job is to get the ball in there?”
Former Charlton manager Alan Curbishley added: “He [Jaiyesimi] looks like he can go past players – pace. But it sort of depleted us in the centre of midfield. I thought he [Lee Bowyer] should have brought Morgan on – just a straight swap.”
