‘Fractured’ season for Millwall goalscorer – as he backs Gary Rowett’s faith to start him against West Brom
Gary Rowett was delighted to see Mason Bennett deliver in Millwall’s 2-0 win today over West Bromwich Albion.
The Lions boss revealed that he was toying with starting Tyler Burey instead of the former Derby County man.
Bennett put Millwall ahead in the 67th minute at The Den. It was his first goal of the season. The last time he had scored was at the start of April.
“Mase has been so unlucky this season,” said Rowett. “He’s had Covid, he’s been unwell on the morning of a game, he’s had a little niggle which has kept him out – it’s just been such a fractured season.
“And when you see him in training – he beats people all the time, he can play off both feet, he’s good in the air and he’s strong. He’s got a little bit of everything.
“He’ll feel himself that he needs to add that little bit of consistency but what he has found here is a little bit of a home.

“I nearly started Tyler Burey today because he has been really good. But I felt Mase’s physicality would help us. He has given Kipre a torrid afternoon for 90-odd minutes, which he hasn’t done often enough.
“The goal was a really nice way to finish and an opportunity to build on that performance.
“Benik, at times, got into good areas, worked hard and had some good chances. Burkey looked a threat, he could’ve got in two or three times. He’ll be a really good player for us.
“It’s up to Mason to recover in a run of games and back that up. Sometimes players have got to do it themselves and step up. It’s like the rest of the players – we’ve got to step up again and put another performance in.
“They have given us a little bit of pride and the fans can be proud of their team, in a period where we hadn’t done as well as they’d like.”
