Hercules Wimbledon AC: U20 men win Club Connect 4x100m relay
Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club’s U20 men’s team won the Club Connect 4x100m relay at the London Olympic stadium in front of 50,000 spectators on Sunday, writes George Mallett.
Daniel Guinness, Joshua Martin, Marcus Gayle and Freddie Arkell overcame some of the country’s fastest sprinters to take the title in a new club record of 41.52s.
That mark does not just break the U20 record of 42.22s they set in May but eclipsed the club’s senior record too.
Coach Paul Miller said: “What made the win all the sweeter was that the Be Fit Today Track Academy were, on paper, a faster squad. The key to success was to maximise the quality and speed of our changeovers. They did it, so I am very, very happy.”
The U17 men set a new age group club record of 43.50s to finish sixth in their race.
That team consisted of Conor Kelly, Omari Koroma, Javon Blake and Markos Schuchinsky with the winning team BFT Track Academy posting the seventh fastest time in the country this year across all age groups (41.20s).
Jonathan Cornish took his second 10km race win of 2023 as he ran 30:33 at the Elmbridge 10km.
Cornish set much of the early pace opening up a gap over two-time South of England Cross-Country champion Andy Coley-Maud to finish 17 seconds clear.
It adds to the Eastleigh 10km title the England international won in March.
