Jake Forster-Caskey’s wait for a goal ended as Charlton Athletic record win over Wigan Athletic

Jake Forster-Caskey’s first goal in more than two-and a half years earned Charlton Athletic a 1-0 victory over Wigan Athletic yesterday.

The Addicks midfielder’s last time on the scoresheet was a brace against Rochdale in February 2018.

Forster-Caskey had clipped the top of the bar with a free-kick in the first period.

Wigan keeper Jamie Jones was unhappy with his defensive wall in the build-up to the decider, Forster-Caskey’s effort just evaded him and clipped off the inside of the right upright on its way in.

Joe Garner dropped to the turf in disbelief after striking an excellent chance wide in the first period with Ben Amos also needing to be alert to save Darnell Johnson’s header.

Wigan midfielder Lee Evans hit the crossbar late on.

Charlton did not create many clearcut chances although QPR loanee Paul Smyth was lively on his debut.

Addicks manager Lee Bowyer also handed first appearances to Chris Gunter and Ryan Inniss – both solid at the back – with Andrew Shinnie also going straight into the line up after his loan switch from Luton Town.

Chuks Aneke produced three quality moments of control with his first touch – one of those forcing Jones to race quickly off his line in the first period to deny the big striker.

Omar Bogle replaced Aneke for the final 27 minutes and dragged a shot wide of target.
