Lee Bowyer targets win at Elland Road as Charlton chief reveals which rival they need to be ‘careful’ of in drop dogfight

Lee Bowyer has spelled out that his Charlton side will go for the win at Leeds United on Wednesday – and also revealed which club he feels is most likely to climb out of the Championship bottom three.

The Addicks are 21st in the table ahead of the final round of matches this week.

But Luton Town and Barnsley both won at the weekend. The former are level on points with Charlton but have a hugely inferior goal difference.

If you took into account Wigan’s 12-point deduction for going into administration then they would slide into the final relegation berth. But even then they can climb out if they beat Fulham at home.

Leeds are already crowned champions but showed no signs of stepping off the gas as they eased to a 3-1 victory at Derby on Sunday.

Bowyer said: “We have got to go there and try and win. We can’t rely on other teams. It’s in our hands – if we win we’re safe.

“If we don’t win and get a draw then you’re hoping other results go your way.

“Everyone down there has a tough game – no-one has an easy one; Barnsley are at Brentford, Luton have got Blackburn, who were exceptional at the weekend, Wigan are playing Fulham and we’re playing Leeds – it’s going to be difficult for all the teams.

“But I’ve said all along to my staff that since we have come back [from lockdown] it is Barnsley that we’ve got to be careful of – they are a good side. They were unlucky not to beat Leeds – they should have got something from that game.

“Barnsley are the ones who worry me really, if you are thinking which of the teams [in the bottom three] could do it [climb out].

“You’d think Brentford are at home and surely they would win but Barnsley have beaten Forest yesterday and were better than Leeds.”
