“Massive” – Chuks Aneke keen to share praise around Charlton Athletic side after win at Wigan

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Chuks Aneke hailed the attitude of Charlton’s players after they extended their unbeaten away run to six matches.

The 27-year-old striker scored his 13th goal of the season and it proved enough to seal a 1-0 victory at rock bottom Wigan on Tuesday night.

Aneke was only available after his red card in Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Blackpool was rescinded on appeal. If it had stood the former Arsenal and Milton Keynes frontman would have served a four-match suspension.

Aneke was replaced in the 82nd minute by Chris Gunter following a spell of treatment.

“I felt my hammy a little bit toward the end of the game,” he told Charlton TV. “I should be ok. I’ll speak to the physio and we’ll see.

“I’m delighted [the red card] got rescinded and that I got the goal today.

“I just try and work hard for the team. We needed that win. I had to be that guy up top for the boys.”

Only Lincoln (33) have banked more points away than Charlton (31) in League One this season.

The Addicks have won nine matches on the road and Aneke, when asked about the significance of the result at Wigan, said: “Massive. We have come off a few bad results and you can start doubting yourselves. But, as we have this season, the boys rallied together and we put in a performance.

“To a man we were unbelievable.”

Aneke also felt he should have had a penalty in the first half.

“The defender pushed me over. It’s part of the game, I think I’m a bit too big to get those decisions.”

Aneke hit 19 goals for MK in the 2018-19 season – his best tally in English football.

He needs seven more in Charlton’s final 14 matches to surpass that total.
