Match report and Neil Harris reaction to Millwall’s 1-1 draw with West Brom – chances squandered as Den unbeaten run extended

Millwall extended their unbeaten record at The Den to three matches but were left to rue missed chances in their 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion today.

The Lions took the lead in the 21st minute through Duncan Watmore.

Cedric Kipre’s attempt to head away a dangerous Ryan Leonard through ball only ended up putting the attacker through and he tucked a low finish past Baggies goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

Millwall had a big opportunity to make it 2-0 shortly after, Leonard again the architect. His pass put Michael Obafemi in on goal but the Burnley loanee produced a tame effort straight at Palmer.

Watmore could not keep another effort down inside the penalty box in the second half and West Brom – who had been ineffectual in possession and subbed off Jed Wallace just after the hour mark – punished a mistake by Joe Bryan.

The Lions left-back did not contest referee James Bell’s decision to point to the spot after Bryan made contact with Grady Diangana. Substitute John Swift kept his composure to send the ball into the bottom left corner, leaving the underworked Matija Sarkic with no chance.

Millwall head coach Neil Harris said: “What a good Millwall performance for so long. Especially in the first half. West Brom nailed it in the first five minutes, in the sense they slowed it down and passed it backwards and sideways for so long to stop us getting near it and putting pressure on them.

“Then we grew into the game and we had them rattled. They are a really good side with really good players – just look at their bench and the ability they have got. We bossed it. We came in at half-time and the lads summed it up – they are going to get a rollicking in their changing room and be aggressive, because we should have been 3-0 up and out of sight.

“West Brom were dominating the ball at the start of the second half but we had all the chances. A couple of the lads were a little bit disappointed not to get on the scoresheet – or Dunc not adding to his tally – because if you don’t see teams off at this level you get punished by a moment. When they have got quality one-v-one players then it only takes a moment, like happens with the penalty award, that you get found wanting.

“Glass half-full, in the sense of a really strong performance. A really good point gained against a really good side – but obviously the disappointment is because we deserve the three.”
