Matty Godden goal sends Charlton Athletic to Wembley – as top scorer’s finish defeats Wycombe Wanderers

Charlton Athletic are heading to Wembley in the League One play-off final after Matty Godden’s 22nd goal of the season was enough to defeat Wycombe Wanderers at The Valley.

The Addicks will face Leyton Orient at Wembley on June 25 with promotion to the Championship at stake.

The finishing prowess of Godden has been absolutely vital since his summer transfer from Coventry City and the veteran frontman produced another poacher’s finish after Lloyd Jones’ initial attempt to finish had been thwarted.

Chances, just like in the first leg at Adams Park, were at a premium.

Lloyd Jones headed a glorious chance wide of goal in the 38th minute from close range from Godden’s cross.

Kayne Ramsay produced two quickfire crucial blocks to deny Garath McCleary and Xavier Simons before the breakthrough was made by the hosts.

Charlton’s defence once again did an excellent job on Wycombe dangerman Richard Kone, who was subbed off in the 73rd minute for ex-Millwall winger Fred Onyedinma.

The Addicks managed to make it through the closing stages without any scares.

Charlton boss Nathan Jones sank to his knees and prayed towards the sky just moments before referee Dean Whitestone’s full-time whistle. The Welshman, appointed last January and steered the South Londoners to fourth in the final standings, knelt in his technical area as fans spilled on to the pitch.

The Addicks, who won promotion to England’s second tier in 2019, are back on the brink of a Championship return.

Orient, with their boss Richie Wellens in SE7 tonight to scout out their final opponent, stand in their way.
