Millwall boss explains reason why they didn’t pursue new loan deal for Brighton man

Millwall did not pursue taking Jayson Molumby on loan – because there was no option to buy the Brighton midfielder.

Albion rejected a club-record bid by the Lions for the 21-year-old. The Republic of Ireland international instead made a temporary switch to Preston North End.

Molumby played 40 games on loan with Millwall last season. The SE16 club are determined to add to their options in the middle of the park with Motherwell’s Allan Campbell, 22, on their shortlist.

“Jayson has got real potential and we felt if we could purchase him that we’d have a really good midfielder for the future and who could impact us now,” said Lions boss Gary Rowett. “Taking him on loan again was possible, but we felt as though it wasn’t really fixing the problem.

“That’s one we decided not to pursue as a loan, unless there was an option to purchase at some point.

“We felt there was a chance to get him on a permanent but it didn’t quite work out that way. We move on with other targets.”
