Millwall boss Gary Rowett gives his verdict on 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion
Gary Rowett felt his Millwall side deserved their 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion – and arguably should have won by a greater margin.
Second-half goals from Mason Bennett and Benik Afobe ended the Lions’ four match losing streak, three of those in the Championship.
Rowett said: “We’ve been disappointed the last three games, two we actually performed pretty well in for the majority of the game. The Blackpool one we all kind of let ourselves down.
“We spoke before and we knew what type of game it was going to be – incredibly direct and competitive game. With Andy Carroll starting that was only going to accentuate that and you’ve got to deal with it. They are very good at what they do.
“We wanted to show a little bit of character and games like that are an opportunity to show what we’re all about. First half was a real battle. I’m sure it wasn’t a great spectacle for the spectator, but we knew the game would be like that.
“In the second half we were by far the dominant team in terms of chances, territory, forward running and quality – it was just whether we could score one of those chances.

“Benik had a couple of moments and Burkey had a big chance where the keeper makes a fabulous save. Mase had a couple of chances. There was a frustration at that point whether we would find that quality – thankfully we did. We scored two really good goals and probably should’ve had more.
“I can’t remember, apart from a set-piece, where we looked massively threatened. It was a big performance and there were a lot of big performances within the game itself.
“The confidence of the squad is more my priority. I’ve been around the block and I know if you don’t win games it is never simple. But that didn’t really come into my mind. It’s about the players putting in a performance which they feel they have worked hard for.
“The last three games have been difficult because if Benik scores his chance against Forest then we go away feeling great – you concede a last-minute goal and you feel terrible. You back that up with Blackpool and you feel like the world has caved in. It’s about us showing character and we competed brilliantly.
“We defender superbly and our front three were an absolute handful at times. Maikel Kieftenbeld, coming in for his second start in a while, was immense. There were lots of things to be positive about today.”
