Millwall boss: I totally get why some of our fans left the Luton match early

Gary Rowett admitted he could understand why some Millwall fans headed for the exits early in today’s 2-0 loss to Luton Town.

Harry Cornick’s double, clinically finishing in either half, ended the Lions’ unbeaten run of seven matches.

And Rowett conceded that the South Londoners, who had been hunting a third straight Championship win, deserved to take nothing from the contest.

He said: “Disappointing. Disappointing because we went into the game off the back of a seven-game unbeaten run – to have won two games in a row and be three points off the play-offs and to really be quite excited about could we put a performance in in front of our fans at home that showed we’re desperate to try and get to where we want to try and be – we didn’t look like we quite had that extra bit of drive, that extra bit of competitive nature about us. We looked like we wanted the game to be a little bit nice.

“Luton came and did all the right things that an away team needs to do. They sat in shape, worked incredibly hard and fought for every ball. Every time a set-piece went into the box their heads were on it first. They’ve scored with two counter-attacks and they looked threatening.

“We had opportunities to play forward and we didn’t. We got the ball nicked off us trying to play nice little passes. We’ve had a lot more possession and a lot more shots, but we didn’t really look like we were every going to win the game. Luton deserved to win, even with a penalty with 10 minutes to go. If we’d scored it then yes, it gives us a chance. But it felt like that summed the game up. We miss the penalty and the game fizzles out.

“I can see our fans leaving and I don’t blame them, because they have come with the hope that we’ll put in a real determined performance and it just felt like today it wasn’t a performance that we needed.”
