Millwall boss states transfer stance again as Jed Wallace – linked with Villa – scores stunning free-kick

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Gary Rowett spelled out again that Millwall are under no pressure to sell any of their squad after Jed Wallace once again put himself in the headlines with a sensational free-kick goal in today’s 1-1 draw with Cardiff City.

The attacker has been linked with Aston Villa and notched his ninth goal of the campaign in Wales.

Wallace, 25, also scored an excellent goal in a victory at Swansea earlier in the season, not long after Rowett took charge at The Den.

The Lions chief said: “He’s not going to be over popular in Wales is he? He was probably quite popular with Cardiff fans before today and less popular after the game.

“That’s what he can do. You see both sides of Jed – trying to do the right thing late on pressing high because he knows we’re too deep and maybe just gets picked off a little bit. These are the things he’s got to learn but he’s doing them for the right reasons.

“He’s trying to create opportunities, you can see how bright he is. Set pieces are the one thing where he’s got terrific quality. The game was probably waiting on Tomlin doing something the other end or Jed doing something our end. Certainly Jed came up trumps for us.

“We’ve perhaps got to not rely on Bart to make a top-drawer save and we can’t rely on Jed to get us back in a game or to win us a game every week.

“I expect interest in players who are playing well. But we’re not a selling club. The owner has made it clear we don’t need to sell players, but at the same time we’re always sensible.

“Let’s see what happens. We certainly don’t want to lose our best players, we want to add to them and see if we can achieve. But every club and every manager is going to have mixed feelings about what might happen, because it’s a little bit uncertain.”
