Millwall defender Murray Wallace: We got carried away with our start – we won’t do same thing again now

Murray Wallace reckons that Millwall will stay grounded over their current run of form – admitting they did let it affect them earlier in the season.

The Lions are undefeated in seven Championship matches after Saturday’s 1-0 victory at Derby County and have lost just once since late October.

Millwall are two points behind sixth-placed Fulham.

But left-back Wallace says the Lions thought they had cracked it in the opening weeks of the campaign as they won three of their first four fixtures – only to then lose 4-0 at Fulham. It saw them endure an eight-game winless spell with Neil Harris stepping down as manager.

Asked about Millwall being a player in the top-six battle, the Scot said: “I don’t see why not. We’re that close. But we’re just focus on the next game, the cliche that it is.

“At the start of the season we had a great start and started getting carried away – thinking we’d do this – then had a bad run of form.

“We will just keep our feet on the ground and see where it takes us.”

Millwall have lost just once since Gary Rowett took on the managerial reins in SE16 and made it back-to-back away victories.

“We’ve had games before in midweek where we’ve given a lot of effort but not hit the same standards,” said Wallace.

“It comes down to the staff and how we recover.

“We were brilliant again today [Saturday].

“A new manager comes in and you get the bounce with new ideas. The manager gives a lot of credit to Neil Harris and the squad he’s formed. He sees what a great group it is. He has just bought his side and tactics and energy in training. It’s gone down really well.

“We’re enjoying playing for him.”

Millwall’s players had their Christmas party in London on Saturday night. Then they went to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park on Sunday. There is always a fancy dress theme.

Wallace said: “I don’t know if you have seen Money Heist on Netflix, but we’re all going in the same sort of outfit.

“Normally we are super heroes but we’re all going in a red jump suit. Whatever goes on we will keep in house.

“We’re all sensible enough. Everyone has a phone these days. Of course we will have a good time, it is even better after a win.”
