Millwall show ruthless streak in big win over Sheffield Wednesday – as quality finishing makes all the difference

Gary Rowett was pleased to see his Millwall side show their ruthless side in today’s 4-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

The last time the Lions’ scored that many goals before today was when they beat Huddersfield by the same scoreline on the final day of last season.

Millwall racked up the chances in a second-half where the saves of Keiren Westwood stopped it being an even heavier loss for the relegated Owls.

Only four clubs have lost fewer games than the Lions in the Championship this season but they have the most draws – 14 – in the division.

Rowett said: “We’ve had a lot of these drawn games – I can honestly say that there hasn’t been that many where we’ve been hanging on and fortunate. Most of them we’ve had big chances and most we should’ve gone on and won.

“It’s come down to one thing – that quality and making sure you’re ruthless when you get chances. We haven’t done that and that’s why games have still been alive – we’ve been playing well but it’s not enough.

“It was great to score those goals and lovely to be able to relax for the last 10-15 minutes. That’s probably the most shots we’ve had in a game – 25 – and Sheffield Wednesday had four shots. In an attacking sense it was a pretty dominant performance and we thoroughly deserved the win.”

Kenneth Zohore, Scott Malone, Ben Thompson and Tom Bradshaw scored as Millwall chalked up a second league win at The Den this season.

Asked if it was a relief to get maximum points on the board in SE16, Rowett replied: “Absolutely. Our away form has been top six and our home form has been bottom six. We had to do something to turn that around and deserved the win in the way they responded to going a goal behind.”
