Millwall winger would have been allowed to make January loan exit – but right option never came up

Tyler Burey would have been allowed out on loan at the end of the last transfer window – but the right move never came up for the Millwall winger.

The former AFC Wimbledon youngster signed a new contract with the Lions earlier this week.

And Gary Rowett was prepared to countenance a temporary exit for Burey, who has had a taste of senior action this season.

“We had a debate between all the coaching staff – Tyler is one that is very close to the team,” said the Millwall chief. “He has been in and out of the squads, like a young player often is.

“He has shown he can do things in spells on the pitch but also shown little bit of game development would be ideal. In an ideal world we would probably have got Tyler out with the opportunity to play 20 games to help with next season. Next season is a big season for him. But we weren’t so desperate that we were prepared to just put him anywhere. It always had to be the right move.

“That opportunity didn’t come and he continues his development and we see if we can bring him forward for next season.

“We’ve already seen what a loan has done for Danny McNamara, he has kicked on to another level.

“Young players like Tyler need game time and if we can’t guarantee first-team it is crucial he gets some. He’ll flit between us and the U23s and he’ll be training with the group all the time. It’s really whether he can go from a young player with lots of great physical attributes and some very good technical attributes to getting that little more game understanding to impact at Championship level.”
