Nigel Adkins gives his verdict on new Charlton Athletic goalkeeping coach Glyn Shimell
Glyn Shimell has been appointed as Charlton’s new goalkeeping coach following a glowing recommendation from Eric Steele.
Shimell had been head of academy goalkeeping at Millwall, writes Richard Cawley.
The Addicks had a vacancy after Andy Marshall resigned. He is following his former boss Lee Bowyer to Birmingham City.
Steele has been the goalkeeping coach at both Manchester clubs and is now in the same role at the FA.
Charlton boss Nigel Adkins said: “Ged Roddy [technical director] spoke to Eric Steele and I spoke to Steeley as well, regarding who we could bring in. Glyn came highly, highly recommended.
“Eric is vastly experienced and couldn’t speak highly enough of Glyn. I’m really looking forward to working with him.
“I’m sure he is going to be a valuable member of the coaching team and very important for the goalkeepers, because we’ve got some very good young ones coming through. I take a big interest in the goalkeepers, having been one myself I can understand the issues they go through.
“It’s football – there is always going to be movement. What you do is go with the flow.”
Shimell played 24 games for AFC Wimbledon in the Combined Counties League.
He became Bromley’s head of goalkeeping in 2013 and stayed five years before an eight-month spell with Crystal Palace’s academy.
Shimell hooked up with the Lions in August 2018.
