No bold predictions from Charlton Athletic’s new manager Nathan Jones

Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones is not making any bold statements in terms of his plans and objectives for the League One club.

The first task facing the 50-year-old, who was appointed boss on Sunday, is to pull the Addicks out of the relegation battle – starting at fellow strugglers Reading on Saturday.

Jones has won promotion before at Luton Town – they were runners-up in League Two in 2018. And he also had them in a strong position to go up in League One and the Championship in his two spells there – on both occasions his successor going on to achieve a promotion.

Jones – asked about his targets for Charlton – told the South London Press: “We won’t make lofty predictions but what we will do is have bold plans that say: ‘This is where we’d like to end up’.

“If we can put things in place then this will give us the best chance of getting, firstly, out of League One and then we will plan for the Championship while trying to get out of League One.

“Everything will have to have really good processes and a number of people who are aligned and make tough tough decisions, good decisions and bold decisions.

“With all that hard work, a little bit of luck and God’s will, who knows what can happen? All we have to make sure is that this club keeps moving forward. So that year in and year out we improve on pretty much every level and then we build something again that the fans can really, really get behind.

“We want to do it as quickly as possible but we also realise that, as they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day and Charlton as a Premier League club wasn’t built in a day. Every decision we make now is to take the club forward on every level and that is all we can guarantee.

“All I want to do is initially put a team out there that the fans can really get behind and see themselves in and me in. Then we need to get enough results to end the season positively and then we can start to really build that momentum from there.”
