Oxford United boss Robinson: We had to man-mark Charlton Athletic dangerman

Karl Robinson felt the best way to nullify the threat of Diallang Jaiyesimi was to man-mark the Charlton winger.

Jaiyesimi struggled to make any impact in Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Oxford United and was replaced midway through the second half by Josh Davison.

U’s manager Robinson said: “We just felt we could follow him and man-to-man mark him. If he comes off between the lines and gets a run on you then he is a very difficult player to play against.

“We worked very hard on that. We only played on Wednesday night, people forget that – we had no recovery time.

“We spoke about how you have to deal with these two wide strikers. It’s really hard. But you also know about the delivery. Albie [Morgan] looks like a young man and I’m so proud of him. You know the delivery is top drawer – the ball he put in for Stockley against Sheffield Wednesday.

“You know you are always going to be under pressure from set-plays, the ball is going to come in your box and you know they have got wide players who want to play inside, off the line.”
