Portsmouth set to land Millwall right-back Mahlon Romeo on loan

Millwall defender Mahlon Romeo is set to join Portsmouth on loan before tonight’s 11pm transfer window deadline.

The South London Press understands that the Lions full-back is ready to drop down to League One.

Romeo, 25, has not featured for Millwall since their 3-1 loss at Cardiff City. He did not make their matchday squad for their next two matches, Billy Mitchell playing as right wing-back in both of those games.

Romeo has played 221 senior matches for the Lions – proving a shrewd piece of business by former Lions chief Neil Harris following his release by Gillingham.

But Danny McNamara managed to dislodge him as first choice after returning from a loan spell at St Johnstone last season.

McNamara and Ryan Leonard, both options on the right of the backline, have both been sidelined by injury. And Millwall boss Gary Rowett has now turned to Mitchell to plug that gap.
