QPR defender under no illusions that survival fight is “extremely difficult” despite win over Millwall

Steve Cook has admitted that QPR’s battle to retain their Championship status will be “extremely difficult” and has challenged his side to build on Saturday’s 2-0 win over Millwall.

Ilias Chair and Sinclair Armstrong scored for the R’s as they ended a seven-match run without a win.

QPR host fellow strugglers Huddersfield Town on Sunday knowing another three-point return will lift them out of the Championship bottom three

Centre-back Cook, 32, told the club’s official website: “It (the win over Millwall) means nothing if we don’t build on it.

“We’re in a position where it is difficult, it’s not nice. You’re playing with a lack of confidence at times and the first first 15 minutes (at the weekend) showed that. But we stuck in there and ground it out.

“The second half wasn’t pretty but that is what it is going to take.

“We’ve got 18 games to keep this club in the league. It’s going to be extremely difficult but we’re all up for the challenge.

“I’ve been relegated before and it’s not nice, it is something that hurts me deeply. We’ve got to give everything.

“It’s a nice win and good to get a clean sheet but we have to focus on Sunday, which is the biggest game this club has had in a long time.

“I’ve been disappointed to miss a lot of games through injuries. I’m a bad injured player, I probably annoy the physios an awful lot. They were probably delighted to see me back on the pitch for more reasons than just playing.

“There are a lot of points to be won. We know ourselves we’ve underachieved individually and as a collective this year but the beauty of football is it always gives you another opportunity to redeem yourself.

“The fans have never left us, they are here until the final whistle.

“The fans deserve victories and they won’t care how they come, either.”
