QPR manager reveals his hope for Lyndon Dykes after his double in win over Manchester United

BY NICK KITUNO

Mark Warburton hopes Lyndon Dykes will carry his momentum into the new season as he netted twice from the bench in Queens Park Rangers’ 4-2 pre-season victory over Manchester United.

The striker, fresh from his Euro 2020 campaign with Scotland, scored either side of trialist Moses Odubajo’s long-range stunner to put the R’s into cruise control after half-time.

Charlie Austin cancelled out Jesse Lingard’s third-minute opener before Anthony Elanga pulled one back for the Red Devils late on at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

Dykes, who joined QPR from Scottish club Livingston last summer, finished his first Championship campaign strongly with 12 goals after enduring 20 games without one.  Now embarking on his second season in England, Hoops boss Warburton hopes he can kick on again.

He said: “He knows you cannot stop, you have to keep working hard to move forward. He has to keep working on his game, his runs, his finishing, his technique, his desire – everything that you know about football – but today, great finish[es].

“I hope all the players are in that position [to kick on]. Not in terms of the Euros, but in terms of being ready to impact the season. They all have to be that way. He knows that Charlie [Austin] is there, he has got Charlie Kelman, he has got Chrissy Willock. There’s boys chomping the bit to start games, so he has to keep working hard every single day.

“The moment you sit back on your laurels you’re finished in football, so he’s done very well over the summer, good afternoon’s work, everything now moves forward to Tuesday night in Cambridge.”
