Released defender in the stand to watch Charlton Athletic friendly victory

Sean Clare was a spectator at Charlton’s 4-0 friendly win over Welling United on Saturday, but manager Dean Holden was not making anything of the defender’s appearance at Park View Road.

The 26-year-old was released at the end of last season and is yet to seal a move elsewhere.

Clare, who made 92 appearances for the Addicks, was sat next to Tracey Leaburn, head of first-team player care.

“I’ve not seen Sean, to be honest,” said Holden, when asked by the South London Press about his ex-player being at the match. “He’s got a good relationship with the players, I imagine he’s just popped down to see his mates.”

Holden spoke to fans after the fan whistle and posed for pictures after the fixture against the Wings was completed.

“I was made aware that this game was really important to us (as a traditional opener),” he said. “Maybe it had not been as forthcoming in recent years.

“It was important to me that we show our appreciation to the fans. It’s a big part of how we move forward this season. There were a couple of thousand in here today. There were plenty of autographs.

“We have to keep building that connection. We’ve met many new supporters. I believe this is a bit of a hot ground for our supporters who live around this way.

“It’s been a good day all round.”
