Rugby Union: Wimbledon stronger throughout in 32-15 at Maidenhead

Another week and another awkward away fixture, this time against Maidenhead in a match postponed from December.

Wimbledon welcomed back Jack Cooke at lock and gave first starts to Luke Cerely at number eight and Alex Kerr at scrum half – both had strong games. Kerr replaced Owen Davies, who moved to outside half.

It was also pleasing at the end that no injuries were received so the coaches will have a squad in form to select from this weekend. A strong wind gave both teams difficult playing conditions on Maidenhead’s artificial pitch, but Wimbledon were the stronger side throughout scoring two tries in the first half tries with Maidenhead scoring one for a half-time score of 10–5.

The second half started with Wimbledon taking control of the match in the first 10 minutes with two tries and from then on Maidenhead were struggling to catch-up, although they did manage two further tries of their own, both unconverted.

Wimbledon’s tries were scored through Jack Cooke and centre Finn Taylor, with two apiece, and scrum-half Owen Davies scored three conversions and two penalties.

Other notable players were centre Alex Pickersgill, with strong defence and a strong front row. Captain Josh Bayford moved to the unfamiliar position of lock and hooker Tayler Reichardt played at flanker.

Wimbledon are at home against Sidcup on Saturday(2.30pm kick-off).
