Ryan Leonard likely to be back in central defence tonight – as Lions chief praises his adaptability

Ryan Leonard could be set for another central defensive shift for Millwall tonight – with manager Gary Rowett praising his adaptability.

The former Southend United and Sheffield United midfielder played on the right side of a three-man back three in last week’s 1-0 victory at Huddersfield Town.

And Leonard has also deputised at right-back for the Lions as well in the past.

Millwall’s defensive options have been depleted by Murray Wallace being ruled out with a broken foot.

It throws up the distinct possibility that Leonard will slot into the role he performed against the Terriers for this evening’s Championship clash with high-flying Watford.

Rowett said: “Lenny is so diligent. You get some players when you change position and they don’t really fancy it. Lenny just goes and does his best – whatever position.

“When it is a straightline game, suitable for him to step on to things and drive forward then he’s absolutely brilliant at it. I’m asking him to do the same job, but from 30 yards further back.

“He is physically strong, quick and aggressive – he moves quickly in small areas and handles the ball well because he is a midfielder.

“I’ve seen him do it [play a central defensive role] at Sheffield United once or twice. We needed him in there against Huddersfield because they have got good movement and drag you into areas to try and use their pace in forward areas.

“He did really well and felt comfortable. He found it quite easy on the physical side.”
