South London boxer Caroline Dubois posts shutout points win on professional debut
South London’s Caroline Dubois produced a shutout points win on her professional debut on Saturday night.
The 21-year-old, the younger sister of Greenwich heavyweight Daniel Dubois, won every round on referee Chris Jones’ scorecard to prevail 60-54 against Lithuania’s Vaida Masiokaite (2-15-4).
She turned professional after representing Great Britain at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo – losing a narrow points decision to Sudaporn Seesondee in the quarter finals.
Dubois reckoned nerves played a part in her performance against Masiokaite. She said: “I rushed my work a little bit. If I’d just sat back and boxed like I know I can then I would have been better.”
But trainer Shane McGuigan was impressed: “She hasn’t boxed for six or seven months, since the Olympics, and it is all a new experience.
“There are definitely a lot of nerves going in there – her first time boxing without a vest and headguard. She handled it amazingly.
“That girl [Masiokaite] is a seasoned pro who has been in there with some serious opposition. So to have won every round on your debut is great.
“It is a good thing that Caroline got some rounds in, we need those rounds. She is probably going to be out again at the end of March.”
