Welling United appoint from Charlton and Millwall winger as new boss
BY MARK DOIG
Following relegation from the National League South, Welling United have moved swiftly to appoint former Manchester United winger Lee Martin as their new manager.
He already has a South London connection having made 20 appearances for Charlton Athletic, on loan from Ipswich Town, before signing for Millwall, where he spent three years.
He then spent two seasons at Gillingham, and two at Exeter City before moving to Kent and non-League football.
Two seasons at Gillingham were followed by a year at Dover Athletic before he moved to Ramsgate, Ashford United, and back to Ramsgate where he was part of the team that won the Isthmian League South East championship.
Former Bromley favourite Billy Bingham, has joined Martin as his assistant manager.
Martin is promising exciting and attacking football. He said “Nowadays we want to play football. We want to be progressive. We want to carry the thirds. It’s all very good having control of the possession but the game’s not changed.
“It’s still an invasion game and we want to make the fans excited. We want to bring an entertaining style of play to them and that is doing it in that area there.”
