Wigan boss gives his verdict on Charlton’s promotion prospects following 2-0 win at The Valley

Wigan boss Leam Richardson still expects Charlton to be firmly in the League One promotion picture despite Saturday’s 2-0 defeat leaving the South Londoners languishing at the wrong end of the table.

Tendayi Darikwa broke the deadlock in the 88th minute at The Valley before substitute James McClean sealed the outcome in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Richardson, asked if Charlton can recover from their poor start to the campaign, said: “Absolutely. They have got a fantastic manager. I know a lot of the staff very, very well – fantastic staff. They’ve got fantastic players. The club speaks for itself, doesn’t it? It’s a huge club with a great fanbase. This lot will be up there come the end of the season, I’m sure.

“We started the game ever so well, Charlton came back into it second half – truth be known – and they imposed themselves around the pitch and started to dictate certain things. But we grew into it towards the end of the game and got stronger. Their keeper pulled off some really top saves. We deserved to go in front at the end.

“We know how we want to play. We want to improve and be better. I was frustrated with parts of the game but made up with the result.

“Charlie Wyke and Will Keane led the line ever so well. If you’re going to be successful on a Saturday then you need everybody. Certain lads – Jordan Jones, Callum Lang and other lads I mentioned – took hits and ran their socks off. For then Gavin Massey, James McClean and Stephen Humphrys to come on the pitch, it kind of finished the job off. That’s working together and knowing your jobs when you come on the pitch.”
