Women’s football: Charlton second in Championship as they prove too strong for struggling Watford

BY TOM MASTERS

Elisha Sulola’s double inspired Charlton Athletic to a 3-0 win over struggling Watford at The Oakwood.

Her quickfire brace came in just seven minutes during the first half to keep the pressure on FA Women’s Championship leaders Liverpool.

Lois Roche opened the scoring after just eight minutes against a struggling Golden Girls side who still have just one win this season.

The win ensured second-placed Charlton kept pace with the dominant Reds, who secured a 3-0 victory of their own on Sunday and lead the table by nine points.

In-form Charlton came flying out of the blocks when Katie Robinson got hold of the ball, finding Roche who still had plenty to do 20 yards out, but curled it beautifully around a helpless Georgia Ferguson.

Sulola capitalised on an error from Ferguson who, when attempting to clear the ball, was charged down by the 20-year-old and the rebound nestled in the back of the net to double the Addicks’ lead on 33 minutes.

Robinson then pounced again, swinging in a perfect cross from the right-hand side and it picked out the unmarked Sulola at the back post, who struck it left-footed into the back of the net five minutes before the interval.

Chances were tougher to come by in the second half, but Watford almost grabbed a consolation through Adekite Fatuga-Dada, whose effort hit the crossbar.
