Women’s football: Crystal Palace thumped 4-0 at Liverpool
BY JONNY DRURY
Crystal Palace provided little resistance as Liverpool won 4-0 in the FA Women’s Championship yesterday.
Rinsola Babajide and Amy Rodgers handed the Reds a 2-0 first-half lead at Prenton Park, before a strike from substitute Amalie Thestrup and a second from Babjide in the final quarter of the game rounded off the win.
It moved the hosts within two points of leaders Leicester City.
It took less than two minutes for the home side to take the lead against the South Londoners.
Babajide played a neat one-two on the edge of the box with Rachel Furness, before lifting the ball over Palace keeper Chloe Morgan for her 20th goal for the Reds.
Liverpool dominated the opening 20 minutes of the game, with Taylor Hinds forcing a smart save out of Morgan, with Palace were penned in their own half.
The Reds went further ahead just after the half-hour mark, as Rodgers found space from distance and fired home to double the advantage.
It was almost game over two minutes into the second period, but Melissa Lawley could only fire over, when it looked easier to score from five yards out.
But 15 minutes from time the points were secured, as Thestrup found the bottom corner from 20 yards to seal the victory.
Babajide got her second and Liverpool’s fourth deep into injury time, as Palace failed to clear a cross and the striker’s effort found the net via a deflection.
