Charlton Athletic boss Jones left fuming as Chuks Aneke’s red card upheld on appeal
Charlton Athletic striker Chuks Aneke will miss their next three matches after his sending off in Monday’s 4-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers was upheld.
The Addicks had appealed the late dismissal but the powerful frontman will sit out Saturday’s trip to Wrexham as well as the final day fixture against Burton Albion at The Valley. Aneke will also be unavailable for the first leg of the play-offs if the South Londoners do not manage to snatch the final automatic promotion spot.
The former Arsenal, Birmingham and MK forward was shown a straight red card after an off-the-ball incident.
Charlton manager Nathan Jones was left livid by the decision not to overturn the official’s decision but was careful not to stray into territory that could see him get into hot water.
The Addicks’ frontline options were already depleted with Miles Leaburn ruled out of the run-in due to injury.
“We’ve appealed it unsuccessfully,” said Jones. “All I want to say is it baffles me beyond all recognition how it hasn’t been.
“I don’t want to speak too much about officials. I just cannot understand how a red card was given for violent conduct – elbowing someone in the face – and having video evidence where that clearly, clearly, clearly didn’t happen and not get rescinded. That’s all I’ll say on the matter.”
Luke Berry came off shortly after scoring Charlton’s second goal against Wycombe with vice-captain Lloyd Jones also subbed in the closing stages.
“It was a brutal game physically,” said Jones. “They were physical and used certain tactics as well, so it was a bruising game. We’ve had to dust them down this week – everything is going to be touch and go before the weekend, so we will just see.
“We’re going to go up there in good spirits and if anyone doesn’t make it then it’s just another opportunity for someone.”
Jones has confirmed that striker Daniel Kanu will be in the squad for the match against Wrexham.
